After the Packers released Martellus Bennett as a result of "failure to disclose a physical condition," the Patriots claimed the veteran tight end and now it appears Bennett has been playing with a torn rotator cuff and torn labrum.
The news was first reported by NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and later confirmed by ESPN's Adam Schefter. According to Rapoport, Bennett could try to play through the injury, but if his efforts are unsuccessful the Patriots could put him on injured reserve at "no risk."
The Patriots claimed Bennett, 30, off of waivers just a day after he was released by the Packers. It will cost New England less than $725,000 to have him on their roster for the rest of the season because of the way Bennett's contract is structured. The veteran played for the Patriots in 2016 and had an integral role in the team's Super Bowl championship season.
In claiming Bennett, the Patriots inherited the three-year, $21 million contract that he had signed with the Packers, according to ESPN. If the Patriots do not pick up a $2 million bonus early in the 2018 league year, Bennett would become a free agent again and the Patriots would not have to make any commitments on their salary cap.
