According to multiple online reports, the Zimbabwean Minister of Finance, Ignatius Chombo, has been arrested by the country's army who recovered a whopping $10 million from him. Chombo is reported to have been arrested after gunfire was exchanged between his security and members of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) last night. Chombo is reported to be in custody after the ZDF arrested a number of ministers and senior party officials over allegations of “committing crimes that are causing social and economic suffering in the country in order to bring them to justice.“ While speaking on Al Jazeera, Norton MP, Temba Mliswa, backed the military's intervention and says that it was necessary because Grace Mugabe had usurped power from Mugabe.

Former vice president of Zimbabwe, Emmerson Mnangagwa, is expected to be sworn in as president following the resignation of Robert Mugabe. He will return to the country on Wednesday. The former minister had fled from Zimbabwe in fear of his safety after his removal. Mnangagwa could be installed as president later on Wednesday or on Thursday and is likely to lead ZANU-PF into elections in 2018. Mnangagwa, whose sacking this month prompted the military takeover that forced Mugabe out, was expected to land in Zimbabwe at 1130 GMT, Larry Mavhima, his ally told Reuters. Mugabe resigned as Zimbabwe’s president on Tuesday. “I Robert Gabriel Mugabe in terms of section 96 of the constitution of Zimbabwe hereby formally tender my resignation with immediate effect,” Speaker Mudenda quoted him as he read the resignation letter to parliament. His exit ends a 37-year rule defined by brutality and economic collapse.

Sources say only five Zimbabwe cabinet ministers and the attorney-general turned up for a meeting called by President Robert Mugabe as 17 others opted to attend a meeting to plan the 93-year-old leader’s impeachment. Sources said on Tuesday that the meeting is the first called by Mugabe since a military takeover on Nov. 15. Mugabe faced the start of an impeachment process later in the day as his party sought to end his nearly four decades in power. ZANU-PF plans to bring the motion in parliament after a Monday noon deadline expired for the 93-year-old leader to step down to end nearly four decades in power. Mugabe led the country’s liberation war and has ruled since independence in 1980 but is seeing the swift erosion of his power. He has won a series of elections but is viewed by many in Africa and beyond as a leader who has crippled his country by holding on to power too long. Mugabe has shown no sign of resigning. The United Nations, UN, United States of America and the United Kingdom have all reacted to the military coup in Zimbabwe. The military on Wednesday overthrew 93-year-old President Robert Mugabe  after seizing the National Radio Station on Tuesday. Mugabe has been in charge of the country for 37 years. The UN has consequently issued a security advisory, instructing its personnel to work from home. Some schools were closed and some students failed to sit for their final examinations, including at the University of Zimbabwe. Also, the UK foreign and commonwealth office has updated its travel advice to British nationals in Zimbabwe. It reads in part, “Due to the uncertain political situation in Harare, including reports of unusual military activity, we recommend British nationals currently in Harare to remain safely at home or in their accommodation until the situation becomes clearer.
