States in Nigeria Lagos, Rivers, Kano have highest numbers of prisoners

Lagos, Rivers and Kano states have the highest numbers of prisoners, while Ekiti and Bayelsa have the lowest numbers, according to last year’s figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). The data showed that Lagos has the highest ratio, with 7,396 prisoners out of the national total of 68,686, followed by Rivers and Kano, with 4,424 and 4,183 prison inmates, respectively. Rivers state has one of the worst prisoner congestion ratios, currently accommodating 4,424 prisoners, against the 1,354 capacity.Bayelsa and Ekiti have the lowest number of prisoners, with 444 and 585 last year, but they are still congested, as Bayelsa prison can only accommodate 200 prisoners comfortably, while Ekiti has just 400 maximum capacity. The NBS data also revealled that there are more men in Nigeria prisons than women and more Muslims were in jail between 2015 and last year than Christians. While male inmates last year were 67,329, the women were 1,357.

Havoc as 11 Children Die of Whooping Cough in Kano - Official

The Kiru Local Government Council of Kano State says about 11 children have died of whooping cough at Kankwana village. This is contained in a statement issued by the Information Officer of the local government council, Malam Rabiu Khalil. Mr. Khalil said about 40 other children affected by the same disease were receiving medical attention. Hassan Adamu, the council’s Health Officer, who also confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria, however assured of government’s effort to contain the outbreak. Yakubu Sani, a representative of the World Health Organisation (WHO) in the area, attributed the outbreak to poor routine immunisation and inadequate health mobilisation activities. The District Head of the area, Hamza Bayero, however, urged government to provide emergency medical care to residents to prevent further spread of the disease. About six children had lost their lives to measles in Dashi community of the same local government area in the past two months.

A Twitter user identified simply as Dinma (@didi_promcy) has taken to the social networking platform and narrated the story of he friend was caught by her uncle after she left her University in Ibadan to see her boyfriend in Lagos state. Dinma said further that her friend left school to visit her boyfriend in Lagos but she ran into her uncle who works in the state, after she and her boyfriend ordered an Uber at night to take them to the club, and was shocked to discover that her uncle was the Uber driver. According to Dinma, her friend and boyfriend could not change their destination and her uncle found out they were heading to the club, adding that the man reported her friend to her parents after he dropped them at their destination. Monkeypox Health commissioner confirms 1 suspected case in Nasarawa state

Not more than 15states out of 36states in Nigeria have confirmed the case of monkeypox. Today,Dr Danail Iya, Nasarawa State Commissioner for Health said on Friday that only one suspected case of monkey pox had been recorded in the state.The commissioner made this known while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lafia. Iya said that the blood sample of the suspect had been sent to the Central Public Laboratory in Yaba, Lagos, adding that the state government was waiting for the result. He said that the state government had step up efforts to educate the public on ways to prevent the disease. According to him, the ministry has partnered with traditional and religious leaders to educate people, mostly rural areas, because they are more likely to have contacts with monkeys. 6 Fulani Herdsmen Killed And Beheaded And Their Heads Taken Away In Plateau State (Photos)

Six Fulani herdsmen were reportedly killed and beheaded by suspected members of a militant group named Irigwe in Kuri village in Bassa local government area of Plateau state on Sunday, October 15th. According to reports, the incident occurred on Sunday, October 15th, at about 3pm when the Fulani herdsmen while grazing their cattle at Kuri village in Bassa LGA were attacked, slaughtered, beheaded and their heads catered away by the Irigwe militia. In addition, a total of forty (40) sheep nine (9) cows were macheted and killed and a total of two hundred and thirty-two (232) herds of cattle belonging to the families of the deceased persons were rustled. The unfortunate incident was immediately reported to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Bassa Local Government Area and Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), Sector 6, who visited the scene and confirmed the dead and burial. A 22-year-old housewife, Rashidat Adewuyi, told an Idi-Ogungun Customary Court in Ibadan on Friday that her father-in-law slept on the same bed with her and her husband whenever he visited them. Rashidat made the statement on Friday when she testified in a divorce petition filed by her husband, Lukman Adewuyi. She said her marriage of two years with Lukman had been characterised by agony and regrets due to interference by her father-in-law, who never allowed her to have free access to her husband. File Photo Police in Malawi said they arrested 140 suspected members of vigilante mobs that have targeted people accused of vampirism, clamping down after a wave of attacks that have killed at least nine. The lynch mob attacks began in mid-September in four districts in southern Malawi, where belief in witchcraft is widespread. This week they spread to Blantyre, the country’s second-biggest city, where mobs torched one person and stoned another to death on Wednesday. “We have so far arrested 140 people we suspect are behind the mob killings in Blantyre and other districts and the investigations are still going on,’ Lexon Kachama, Inspector-General of Malawi Police, told reporters. Police were doing everything possible to contain the situation and ensure the violence did not spread to other cities and townships, he said.
