Parents who circumcise male kids risk six-year jail term

Iceland is poised to become the first European country to outlaw male circumcision amid signs that the ritual common to both Judaism and Islam may be a new battleground over religious freedom. A bill currently before the Icelandic parliament proposes a penalty of up to six years in prison for anyone carrying out a circumcision other than for medical reasons. Critics say the move, which has sparked alarm among religious leaders across Europe, would make life for Jews and Muslims in Iceland unsustainable. One in three men globally is thought to be circumcised, the vast majority for religious or cultural reasons. Many Jews and Muslims fear the issue of circumcision could become a proxy for antisemitism and Islamophobia, pointing to similar tensions over religious dress and the ritual slaughter of animals for meat. Muslim and Jewish leaders attacked the proposal, while Cardinal Reinhard Marx, president of the Catholic Church in the European Union, said the bill was a “da

Man removed from plane for excessive farting

Passengers who criticised him banned from using airline again A pilot was forced to make an emergency landing after a row caused by a passenger who refused to stop farting. The passenger apparently kept breaking wind on board a Transavia Airlines flight from Dubai to Amsterdam Schiphol last weekend. The two Dutchmen sitting next to him didn’t take very well to his flatulence, but the unashamed man was apparently not put off and refused to hold back. Members of the crew on the Dutch low-cost airline were apparently less than sympathetic and refused to do anything about it. Despite a warning from the pilot, a fight between the men then broke out, causing the flight to be diverted to Vienna Airport. Police boarded the plane with dogs and removed two sisters and the two men after the pilot made a report about ‘passengers on the rampage. The women are now taking the Dutch budget airline to court after being removed from the flight, and claim

Latvian Prime Minister, Maris Kucinskis, confirmed the arrest but insisted there was “no sign of danger for the Latvian financial system.” “For now, neither I (as prime minister) nor any other official has any reason to interfere in the work of the KNAB. “The office (KNAB) is working professionally,” Kucinskis told the Latvian news agency. “When KNAB considers it possible to give ad

Six dead in latest herder-farmer violence in Nigeria

Six people were killed last weekend when cattle herders battled farmers in northeast Nigeria, a state government official said on Tuesday, in violence that has piled pressure on the government. The clashes happened on Sunday in the Numan district of Adamawa state, where militia from the ethnic Bachama farming community killed at least 30 Fulani herders last November. “Six people were killed and many others were injured in attacks on two villages, Kikan and Lauru,” Adamawa state information commissioner Ahmad Sajo told AFP. “A group of Fulani attacked Kikan, which is a Bachama village, killing three people, injuring many and carting away cattle.” He added: “Bachama youths in the area mobilised and launched a reprisal attack on nearby Lauru village.” But the attack may have targeted the wrong community, as Lauru is home to Hausa-speaking Muslims who are not Fulani people. “They are largely vegetable growers,” said Sajo. “They (the Bachama) killed three people, burned

What if Zidane was right all along?

Time for Zidane to choose a third way? "Real Madrid's players needed a match like that" As criticism has rained down on Real Madrid from all sides, Zinedine Zidane has elected to defend his players for months; perhaps Sunday's 7-1 victory against Deportivo La Coruna has proven the French coach right all along. With Barcelona so far ahead in LaLiga it's obvious that defending their domestic crown is an impossible task for the Madrid club, however the victory against the Galicians has proven just what the team is capable of when most of their big players are available. Gareth Bale has missed much of the campaign, since Christmas he has been able to build his fitness gradually and now is capable of playing successive matches; his brace on Sunday highlighted just what he can do when healthy and confidence. Zidane has been criticised from his approach to the transfer market, all January long he has repeated his belief that the club don't need to sign

Why fasting is good for you

It is fasting time in churches again. Despite its numerous spiritual benefits, not many people are used to it. Most times, the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. However, both – the spirit and the flesh – benefit from fasting. Over the years studies have continued to find many health benefits of fasting, making it a two-for-one exercise. The well-known spiritual benefits of fasting, which involve exchanging what we need to survive for what we need to live for God, include the following identified by religious experts: Soul cleansing: Fasting is a great time to remember the spiritual connection we have to our physical bodies. Without the toxins we put in our bodies, we not only give our bodies a break from the digestive process, but we also allow our spirits to be detoxed. Fasting is a faith-move, an expectation we have that God will fill us with His Holy Spirit, just as He promised. Fasting and meditation cleanse the soul and makes it new so we can receive the Holy Spir

Herdsmen Crisis: ‘Foreigners Employed To Kill In Benue, Others’ – DSS Tells Buhari

Security agencies in Nigeria have alleged that the Islamic State in West Africa network operating within some North Central and South-South sections of Nigeria may be responsible for the recent killings recorded in Benue State and other parts of the country, PUNCH reports. This information is said to be contained in an intelligence report presented to President Muhammadu Buhari by security agencies, including the Department of State Service. A top government official who spoke on the condition of anonymity told journalists on Sunday that the security organisations told the President that the ISWA network is using foreign terrorists and recruiting young men to fight and kill innocent persons “ostensibly to exacerbate tensions along the county’s ethnic, religious and regional fault lines.” He said the discovery was made following the arrest of several suspected attackers made up of Fulani herdsmen, government-sponsored militias, militants and other miscreants in Benue State.
